The Heights Theater and Emerging Pictures presents
“LA TRAVIATA” Recorded at the Famed LA SCALA OPERA HOUSE in Milan, Italy. Starring ANGELA GHEORGHIU, RAMON VARGAS, ROBERTO FRONTALI. Based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, La Traviata, one of Verdi’s most celebrated works, had its premiere at the Teatro la Fenice in 1853. This production at La Scala sees Angela Gheorghiu in her celebrated debut as Violetta. Praised by Bloomberg for having “mastered the role” and “acting her socks off,” Gheorghiu leads an all-star cast which includes Ramón Vargas and Roberto Frontali. In this love story, courtesan Violetta Valery meets a new admirer, Alfredo Germont, who confesses his love. Trouble brews when Alfredo’s father demands that she renounce his son since the scandal of Alfredo’s affair has threatened his own daughter’s engagement. Violetta resists but eventually agrees, not wanting any harm to come to Alfredo or his family. Despite her undying love, she leaves word to Alfredo that she no longer loves him, in an effort to help him move on. Back in Paris, Alfredo denounces his former love cruelly, and months later, Violetta, deathly ill with tuberculosis, has only days to live. Alfredo and his father become contrite when they learn the truth about Violetta’s selfless love, but it may already be too late to ask her forgiveness.

"ANGEL FACE" (1952) SPECIAL JEAN SIMMONS TRIBUTE SCREENING!
THURSDAY MARCH 25, 2010. 7:30PM. ALL SEATS $8.00 Advance tickets available
“Why thank you my dear, you can be so sweet at times…”
Starring JEAN SIMMONS, ROBERT MITCHUM. Directed by OTTO PREMINGER.
This fantastically over the top Noir has got to be one of the best films to come out of HOWARD HUGHES’ bizarre and destructive ownership of RKO, and ranks right up there with LAURA as one of Otto Preminger’s best. JEAN SIMMONS is spot on as a beautiful and calculating ice cold heiress who lures ROBERT MITCHUM into a web of murder and deception. The classic and haunting score is by the great DIMITRI TIOMKIN.
"This intense Freudian melodrama by Otto Preminger (1952) is one of the forgotten masterworks of film noir... The film is a disturbingly cool, rational investigation of the terrors of sexuality...The sets, characters, and actions are extremely stylized, yet Preminger's moving camera gives them a frightening unity and fluidity, tracing a straight, clean line to a cliff top for one of the most audacious endings in film history." – Dave Kehr, The Chicago Reader.

"GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933"
SATURDAY MARCH 27, 2010. 2:00PM. ALL SEATS $6.00 Advance tickets available
The Barton Player Piano Company presents
"GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933"

* A special fundraiser for the continued restoration of the Piano action of the Heights Theater organ!
* PLUS A silent short subject accompanied by EDWARD COPELAND at the keyboard of the Heights Mighty Wurlitzer!
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 is pre-code cinema at it's best, with lots of sexy dialogue and plenty of innuendo. Throw in BUSBY BERKELEY'S kaleidoscope choreography, a great Warren and Dubin score, and a socially realist plot that is as contemporary today as it was in 1933 and you get one great movie!
Gold Diggers of 1933 was filmed during the lowest economic point in American history, and was a film that reflected Depression reality. These gold diggers care less about jewelry than where their next meal was coming from. "Remember My Forgotten Man" evokes general despair, but also specifically the Bonus Army. These were WWI Veterans who came to Washington to ask for the veterans' bonuses they were owed, and when Congress voted down the request they were forcibly dispersed by the troops ordered out by President Hoover, an action that doomed his presidency. Gold Diggers of 1933 embraces newly elected FDR's New Deal, and in the pairing of innocents Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler looks forward to economic and spiritual rebirth.
